My east Durham constituency has long suffered from poor rail connectivity, which limits access to job, education and training opportunities, yet published evidence from the Rail Delivery Group and Oxford Economics shows that increasing rail frequency and capacity can boost productivity and attract investment. I welcome the Government's commitment to an integrated national transport strategy and to driving regional growth, but will Ministers please do all they can to encourage Northern to improve the frequency of rail services in my east Durham constituency?
Context
The MP highlighted poor rail connectivity in his constituency which limits access to job opportunities and referenced evidence showing that increasing rail frequency can boost productivity.
Heidi Alexander
The timetable change on the east coast main line in December last year has meant extra seats and extra services for many parts of the north-east. The new timetable, plus additional fast services on the Durham coastline, has provided faster journeys to more customers across the north, too. I know that the Rail Minister would be delighted to meet my hon. Friend to discuss how his constituents can benefit most from these changes.

Grahame Morris requested support from his hon. and right hon. Friends on the Front Bench for securing investment needed to keep Power Roll's production and jobs in east Durham.
Context
Power Roll is a pioneering solar panel manufacturer in the north-east that needs £5 million to secure its future.
Chris McDonald
Chris McDonald stated that he is familiar with Power Roll, having met their CEO. He mentioned meeting potential investors and offered to discuss further after questions.

Despite previous reassurances from Reach plc, it has now announced redundancies that put 600 journalists' jobs under threat. Many Members are concerned about the continued erosion of our media landscape and the loss of experienced professionals, which could drive people towards fake news and misinformation on social media. Will the Minister meet the National Union of Journalists and concerned MPs from the all-party group to discuss this pressing issue?
Context
Reach plc, owner of several major newspapers including the Mirror, Daily Record, and Express, announced plans to cut up to 600 jobs. This raises concerns about the erosion of professional journalism in the UK.
The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport (Lisa Nandy)
I thank my hon. Friend for his work in supporting not just local journalism but local journalists. They are an essential part of our democracy, and it was not lost on me that local newspapers helped to counter the misinformation and disinformation spreading online during the disorder last summer. It is why we are developing a local media strategy, working with many of the organisations he mentioned, and I would be delighted to meet him, other Members of Parliament and the NUJ to discuss this further.

Last week, the TUC backed the 'Safe Inside' campaign against record-high levels of violence and substance exposure. Does the Secretary agree that conditions are unacceptable for prison staff? Should the Prison Service be held accountable for the health and safety of its workers?
Context
The TUC has unanimously backed the “Safe Inside” campaign, highlighting intolerable levels of prison violence and exposure to psychoactive substances. The Prison Service is under pressure for accountability in ensuring staff safety.
David Lammy (Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice)
I agree that assaults on our staff are entirely unacceptable. I am committing to further announcements in the coming days, which will address some of these issues, while also engaging with unions to discuss these matters.

Open access operator Grand Central already runs five services daily from Sunderland to London King’s Cross through my constituency, but unfortunately they currently do not stop. My constituents have endured years of poor rail services from Northern Rail, with just one overcrowded two-carriage train an hour, which is often cancelled or delayed. While I welcome this Government’s investment in 70 new trains for Northern Rail, we need some immediate solutions. Will the Minister urge the ORR to approve the application from Grand Central to allow these trains to stop at stations in my Easington constituency?
Context
Grand Central, an open access operator, runs five daily services from Sunderland to London King's Cross through Grahame Morris' constituency. However, these trains do not stop at stations in Easington. Northern Rail, another operator, provides poor rail services with overcrowded two-carriage trains.
The Secretary of State for Transport (Heidi Alexander)
Open access operators currently account for 1% of our railways, and they do not always have the same public service obligations as other train operating companies. We have always supported open access operators where they genuinely add value and do not divert revenue away from existing operators, all of which are supported by the taxpayer in some form. I would add that we need to make best use of constrained capacity on the rail network. Ensuring that the railway can recover from problems on the railways is also important to me.

From 7 November to 7 December, Northern Rail cancelled 460 services across the Tyne, Tees and Wear region. An average of 20 services a day were either cancelled or short-formed during this period. Will the Secretary of State facilitate a meeting with the Rail Minister to put in place an urgent action plan and address the issues of staff shortages?
Context
From November to December, Northern Rail cancelled numerous services in the Tyne, Tees and Wear region.
The Secretary of State for Transport (Heidi Alexander)
I, along with the Rail Minister, will be meeting the management of Northern Rail before the end of this month.

On behalf of constituents, he thanks the team for delivering justice on mineworkers' pensions and urges alacrity in addressing the British Coal staff superannuation scheme, inviting a look at energy pilots using mine water from abandoned workings.
Context
Justice has been delivered on mineworkers' pensions, but the British Coal staff superannuation scheme remains unresolved. The question seeks prompt action.
Ed Miliband
I pay tribute to my hon. Friend, a brilliant campaigner for many years. My hon. Friend will hear what was said. This is delivering justice for mineworkers across the country as part of our mission.

Rail Services: East Durham Coastline
01 April 2025
Responding: Simon Lightwood
Main Concerns
["The rail service is characterised by delays and cancellations, leaving passengers stranded. In Easington, Seaham, and Horden, one cancelled train means an hour's wait for the next service, undermining connectivity for education and employment opportunities."]
Specific Asks
['Grahame Morris asks for Northern Rail to provide more reliable services with sufficient rolling stock and carriages during peak periods. He also requests a confirmation on how many of the 450 new trains will be allocated to the East Durham coastline.']

Important Context
- - Ministers answer questions rather than asking them, so have different activity patterns
- - Activity quantity doesn't measure quality or effectiveness of representation
- - Some MPs focus more on constituency work than parliamentary questions
- - Newly elected MPs will have less parliamentary history
