Today, legislation is being laid to tackle Iranian nuclear activity and other hostile Iranian activities. The lack of transparency around Iran’s nuclear programme has posed a serious threat to international peace and security for over two decades. Iran has expanded its nuclear programme to levels that lack credible civilian justification, including the enrichment of uranium to 60%. The UK has complied with UN obligations and imposed further sectoral measures on Iran, expanding financial and trade prohibitions. The new legislation aims to constrain Iran’s nuclear ambitions and strengthen sanctions to reduce Iran's hostile capabilities. Financial measures will reduce Iran's access to the UK financial system, and trade prohibitions will cover goods, technology, and services critical to Iran's nuclear programme. Additionally, the legislation includes sanctions mitigations to allow the continued operation of the Shah Deniz gas field in Azerbaijan, in line with EU and US policies.
