Stephen Doughty, MP for Cardiff South and Penarth, laid legislation to tackle Iranian nuclear activity and other hostile Iranian activities. He emphasised Iran's lack of transparency and its expansion of its nuclear programme, accumulating over 400kg of uranium enriched to 60%, which is unparalleled among countries without nuclear weapons. The UK, in compliance with its UN obligations, imposed sanctions on 71 individuals and entities linked to Iran’s nuclear programme, including financial institutions and energy companies. Doughty also introduced 'The Iran (Sanctions) (Amendment) Regulations 2026' to impose further sectoral measures on Iran, expanding financial and trade prohibitions against Iran to goods, technology, and services critical to its nuclear and conventional weapons capabilities. These measures aim to constrain Iran's nuclear ambitions and reduce its hostile capabilities, while also including sanctions mitigations to ensure the continued operation of the Shah Deniz gas field in Azerbaijan.
