The UK is laying legislation to tackle Iranian nuclear activity and other hostile Iranian activities. Iran's lack of transparency in its nuclear programme has posed a serious threat to international peace and security. The international community has sought clarity and assurance for over two decades, but Iran has not acted in good faith. The UK has designated 71 individuals and entities linked to Iran’s nuclear programme and is now introducing legislation to impose further sectoral measures. The legislation will constrain Iran’s nuclear ambitions through financial measures and trade prohibitions against key industries, including energy, software, metals, gold, and related activities. It also includes general licences to enable the continued operation of the Shah Deniz gas field in Azerbaijan, aligning with the EU and US policies. The Government remains committed to a lasting and sustainable diplomatic solution that ensures Iran never develops a nuclear weapon.
