He emphasised the lack of transparency in Iran's nuclear programme and its expansion in ways that lack credible civilian justification, such as accumulating over 400kg of uranium enriched to 60%. Doughty highlighted the UK's compliance with UN obligations and the designation of 71 individuals and entities linked to Iran's nuclear programme. He announced the laying of 'The Iran (Sanctions) (Amendment) Regulations 2026' to impose further sectoral measures, including financial measures to restrict access to the UK financial system, expanded trade prohibitions on key goods and technologies, and prohibitions on Iranian aircraft landing in the UK. He also noted the inclusion of sanctions mitigations to enable the continued operation of the Shah Deniz gas field in Azerbaijan, aligning with the EU and US policies. The aim is to ensure Iran is never able to acquire a nuclear weapon.
