It is always a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Mr Dowd. I congratulate the hon. Member for Mid Bedfordshire on securing this timely debate and thank him for making the case on behalf of his constituents. The Marston Vale faces pressing transport challenges with low frequency and reliability issues in public transport and congestion on routes such as the A421. East West Rail is fundamental to addressing these needs, aiming to increase passenger services from one per hour to five per hour using battery electric hybrid trains, cutting journey times. This project will transform rail travel experience and connectivity within the Oxford-Cambridge growth corridor. However, it acknowledges concerns over works and level crossings and commits to providing alternative routes where necessary. The £5 billion investment by Comcast NBCUniversal is expected to generate nearly £50 billion in economic benefit for the UK and create tens of thousands of jobs, placing demands on the transport network that must be integrated into East West Rail. Government has committed £1.3 billion to support the project and surrounding infrastructure improvements including Wixams station and highway upgrades along the A421 corridor. An integration taskforce is established to ensure all modes are planned as part of a single vision, while local authorities work on a transport opportunity plan for more coherent journeys. The Government will continue engaging with stakeholders to meet the connectivity, reliability, and sustainable growth needs of Marston Vale.
