Context
The Darzi investigation highlighted NHS resources being overly focused on hospitals rather than community care. There is a disparity in access to Parkinson’s nurses, with many patients lacking local support and having to travel long distances.
Question
Transferring care into the community will give many more patients quick and easy access to specialist care when they need it. However, access to Parkinson's nurses remains deeply unequal, with patients often left without nurses and having to travel a long way to see a specialist nurse. The few available nurses are predominantly funded by Parkinson’s UK. What steps are being taken to increase equitable access to Parkinson’s nurses across the country?
Answer from The Minister for Care (Stephen Kinnock)
Regular support and advice from a Parkinson’s disease nurse specialist is highlighted as a key intervention in the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines on Parkinson’s disease in adults. The forthcoming 10-year workforce plan will address workforce shortages and skills gaps, which is crucial to delivering quality and accessible care for those with Parkinson’s.
Not addressed: The Minister did not provide specific steps or timeline for increasing equitable access to Parkinson's nurses.
