Q1 Liz Twist Lab Blaydon and Consett
Context

The Northern Ireland Assembly faces threats to its stability, with concerns about political parties collapsing the assembly. Previous promises of devolved government have not been fully realized.

Question

What recent assessment has been made of the stability of the Northern Ireland Assembly? Threats to collapse the assembly hang over Northern Ireland and the Secretary of State is sleepwalking towards a political crisis. Key safeguards have still not reached the statute book 22 months on. Northern Ireland simply cannot afford this, so will the Secretary of State fast track the legislation through the House of Lords and commit to passing it in the coming weeks so there is at least a caretaker Executive in place?

Answer from Brandon Lewis

It was disappointing when one political party tried to bring down Stormont with threats. At present, stability at Stormont is important. The legislation was discussed yesterday in the Chamber but the hon. Lady could not join us despite her clear interest. It is crucial that all parties focus on working together to deliver on education, healthcare, and other issues for Northern Ireland.
