Q1 Lilian Greenwood Lab Birmingham Edgbaston
NHS
Context

The report on preparing for a challenging winter by the Academy of Medical Sciences warns of a second wave leading to hospital admissions similar to or worse than the spring.

Question

Will Cabinet Office and the Government grasp that opportunity and act now to implement the report's recommendations?

Answer from Penny Mordaunt (Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General)

It is vital that we do prepare, and we all know the challenges the NHS in particular faces in winter months. Clearly, with the prospect of a second wave, that will be intensified. Yes, we must prepare, but it is also a reason why we still need to follow the chief medical officer's advice to minimise the chances of a serious second wave.
