Questions Asked by This MP
Parliamentary questions and government responses.
Response classifications show how directly each question was answered.
With 15 Members from constituencies along the route already on board, will the Prime Minister support this railway development and urge the Office of Rail and Road to give WSMR’s open access application the green signal?
Context
The Wrexham, Shropshire and Midlands Railway is on track to link north Wales and Shrewsbury directly to London with five daily trains. This project aims to strengthen cross-border travel and drive economic growth.
The Prime Minister (Keir Starmer)
Our plan for change will see the railways reformed to deliver more reliable and better value services for passengers right across the country. My hon. Friend has been a champion for better railways and easier journeys for her constituents. Open access operators have huge potential to offer passengers more choice. I will be delighted to ensure that she and other interested MPs meet the Rail Minister to put their case forward.
Assessment
No specific commitment or timeline for railway project approval beyond meetings with relevant ministers.

Will the Secretary of State join me in thanking staff at the Royal Shrewsbury hospital for their commitment and patience over the past two years as we have seen our trust move from being the worst hospital in the country to the most improved? He could thank staff in person when he joins me on a visit, if he would be so kind.
Context
The MP thanked the Secretary of State for recognizing the improvement in performance at Royal Shrewsbury hospital, which has moved from being one of the worst hospitals to among the most improved. She mentioned the investment through the hospitals transformation programme and two new wards.
Wes Streeting
I am sure that I will be able to swing by on my rounds. It is important to celebrate real improvement and there is more to do, but the credit goes to leaders and staff for the progress made.

I welcome the additional £13 million in the multi-annual commitment for bus funding for Shropshire through the local authority bus grant. That will greatly improve connectivity for my constituents in Shrewsbury, who have missed out over the last decade, in which our bus services were depleted by 65%. Ministers will be delighted to hear that in Shrewsbury we recently launched a successful night bus trial, offering evening services right through to midnight, thanks to the support of local partners such as Shrewsbury BID, councils and the police. What further steps will the Department take to ensure that such services can be maintained and expanded in wonderful rural communities like Shrewsbury?
Context
The MP welcomes the additional funding for Shropshire and asks about maintaining and expanding night-time services.
Simon Lightwood
The Government recently allocated Shropshire £13 million of bus funding from 2026-27, and for the first time the formula used to calculate allocations now includes consideration of rural areas. In addition, our Bus Services Act 2025 gives local leaders the tools to deliver the bus services on which communities can rely.

Which of the sanitary and phytosanitary and agrifood requirements does the Secretary of State expect to be removed on goods moving from Great Britain to Northern Ireland as a result of the SPS agreement with the EU?
Context
The new UK-EU trade agreement aims to smooth trade flows across the Irish Sea. The agreement includes provisions related to sanitary and phytosanitary measures.
The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (Hilary Benn)
Once we have negotiated the legal text and put our rulebook in line with current European arrangements, there will be: no need for SPS paperwork; no mandatory identity checks or physical checks on goods moving; no need for Northern Ireland plant health labels; an end to the ban on chilled frozen meats moving; an end to the ban on movements of products of animal origin imported to GB and then moved to Northern Ireland; and no onward paperwork or checks on agrifood moved for onward processing.

Will the Minister outline what steps the Department is taking to help increase trade with the Asia Pacific, and in particular the Philippines, where a major local company in my constituency, Beaver Bridges, is hoping to expand and grow significantly, with the trade support of this Government?
Context
A local company in Shrewsbury is looking to expand and grow significantly, seeking support from the Government for expanding into the Philippines.
Douglas Alexander
I happen to be meeting the Philippine Government next week, although alas in London, not in Manila. The Department is working hard to agree a Government-to-Government financing framework partnership. That is just part of the work we have under way. If I can be of direct assistance to my hon. Friend and to her local business, I will of course be happy to speak to her.

Will the Secretary of State join me in congratulating the Shrewsbury Colleges Group on its excellent results this summer? It is a superb institution that works to drive up engagement and standards for vocational qualifications, which are vital for our industrial strategy. Will she assure it has parity with academic schools and consider booking a visit?
Context
The Shrewsbury Colleges Group in Shrewsbury has achieved excellent results this summer, with A-level pass rates over 98% and vocational students achieving a triple distinction. The college is working to improve engagement and standards for vocational qualifications.
Janet Daby
Further education is front and centre of unlocking opportunity. I join my hon. Friend in congratulating the Shrewsbury Colleges Group on its excellent results.

Road Safety: Young Drivers
28 January 2025
Responding: Lilian Greenwood
Main Concerns
['290 young people were killed in road collisions in the UK in 2023, and nearly one quarter of all road collisions involved young people. In rural areas like Shrewsbury, there were nearly 1,000 deaths on rural roads that year, with collisions on rural roads being four times more likely to end in a fatality due to unique hazards such as livestock or agricultural vehicles, poor visibility and road quality.']
Specific Asks
['Implement preventive measures such as improved road maintenance, infrastructure, education about specific driving skills for rural roads, and additional learning during the probationary period. Additionally, prioritise public transport infrastructure to give young people options and reduce their need to drive at a very young age.']

Important Context
- - Ministers answer questions rather than asking them, so have different activity patterns
- - Activity quantity doesn't measure quality or effectiveness of representation
- - Some MPs focus more on constituency work than parliamentary questions
- - Newly elected MPs will have less parliamentary history
