Women carers significantly reducing working hours or giving up jobs for loved ones puts them in a financial disadvantage. Does the Secretary of State agree that introducing free personal care and reforming social care would keep more women in work longer?
Context
Women are far more likely to reduce working hours or leave work entirely to look after loved ones, putting them at a financial disadvantage.
Bridget Phillipson
I understand the hon. Lady's important point. Increased carer's allowance threshold delivered a big boost, but challenges remain. Health Secretary is taking action to transform social care.

Fedcap, a national organisation, is running a scheme to get economically inactive people to become the next generation of solar panel engineers. More such schemes will be necessary to plug the skills gap that developers report, especially if the Government are to meet their ambitious housing target. Will the Secretary of State commit to continued funding for schemes that are delivered by such organisations via jobcentres?
Context
The MP references a national organisation running solar panel engineering training schemes to address the skills gap.
Liz Kendall
I congratulate organisations such as the one that the hon. Lady mentions for their brilliant work, not only to keep energy costs down but to support people into work. I will work closely with the Minister for energy consumers, and others in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, to support those organisations, including through jobcentres.

Total income from farming in Northern Ireland fell by 44% last year amid volatile markets, soaring costs and declining output. More than 6,000 Northern Ireland farmers recently gathered in the Eikon exhibition centre to highlight the impact that the changes to agricultural property relief will have on their sector. With dairy farming facing serious economic challenges and gross agricultural output declining, can the Secretary of State commit to publishing a full impact assessment of APR removal for Northern Ireland's farming sector, as well as its wider implications?
Context

Hilary Benn
As I indicated in answer to the same question a moment ago, until we understand the ownership structure of each farm, I do not see how an impact assessment that would answer the hon. Member's question could be done.

Does the Home Secretary agree that opening Chichester custody centre would reduce the time that police officers spend sitting in traffic and get them back on our streets? Police officers are spending a significant amount of time travelling for arrests, reducing their availability.
Context
Police officers spend a four-hour round trip taking those they arrest to Worthing custody centre.
Yvette Cooper
Many issues around the location of centres are operational decisions for police forces. However, maintaining and increasing neighbourhood policing right across the board in all areas is important.

Was the Secretary of State required to declare Quadrature Capital's £4 million donation to Labour before Rachel Kyte's appointment, and has there been any meeting with directors?
Context
Questions have been raised about the declaration of interests related to Rachel Kyte's appointment.
Kerry McCarthy
I am sure that the shadow Minister will receive a reply to her letter in due course, but I can tell her that Rachel Kyte is extremely well respected and her appointment as our special representative has been welcomed across the board.

What steps is the Minister taking with other Departments to ensure that a thriving arts sector in Scotland is unimpeded by Brexit red tape?
Context
Concerns raised about the impact of Government cuts and Brexit red tape on British artists' access to European markets, impacting their success and ambitions.
Martin McCluskey
We are supporting Scottish artists through various Government schemes such as the music export growth scheme, international showcase fund, and Department for Business and Trade's internationalisation fund. We engage across Government with the EU on improving arrangements for touring in Europe without a return to free movement.

Context
The Liberal Democrat MP questions the government's commitment to Scottish arts funding amidst concerns about Brexit red tape and Government cuts.
Martin McCluskey
Scottish artists are world-renowned, and it is important for them to perform internationally. We support Scottish artists through various schemes such as the music export growth scheme, international showcase fund, and Department for Business and Trade's internationalisation fund. £1.5 billion was received from Octopus Energy as windfall tax. Would she consider using this money to reinstate the winter fuel allowance for one year?
Context
The MP inquires about the possibility of using tax revenue to reinstate winter fuel allowances for pensioners until a better system is implemented.
Rachel Reeves
£1.5 billion was already budgeted; we have a £22 billion black hole necessitating tough choices, but we protected winter fuel payments for vulnerable pensioners on pension credit and increased uptake of pension credit.

Does the Secretary of State agree that communities are best placed to understand the need for housing in their area? Will she make it easier for community land trusts to acquire land and build homes quickly?
Context
The MP praised Westbourne community land trust for starting to deliver affordable homes and highlighted that communities are best placed to understand housing needs.
Angela Rayner
The hon. Member makes an important point, and I welcome her to her place. We want to see communities being able to build houses, and we want to ensure that those houses are safe and secure and that we work with community housing trusts and others to deliver the 1.5 million homes.

To ensure that victims see justice, criminal cases need to be heard in a timely manner, which relies on a number of courts being in place to be able to hear them. The future of Chichester Crown court, which is the only Crown court in west Sussex, has been under threat for nearly a decade. Local campaigners fought to save that provision, leading to its reopening to clear the backlog, but its future remains uncertain. Will the Minister meet me to ensure the future of Chichester Crown court?
Context
The future of the only Crown court in west Sussex, which has faced threats and local campaigns for its reopening.
Alex Davies-Jones
We know that courtroom availability is essential to dealing with the backlog, and I will pass on that message to the courts Minister—the Minister of State, Ministry of Justice, my hon. Friend the Member for Swindon South (Heidi Alexander).

Creative Arts Education
18 December 2024
Responding: Janet Daby
Main Concerns
['Jessica Brown-Fuller is concerned about the decline in arts subjects such as drama, music, and design and technology since the introduction of the English baccalaureate. She cites statistics showing a 29% decrease in drama GCSE entries, a 24% decrease in music, and a 65% reduction in design and technology subjects. The MP highlights class inequalities in access to creative industries, noting that independent schools provide better arts education compared to state schools.']
Specific Asks
['Brown-Fuller calls on the Government to reform the English baccalaureate and reintegrate arts education into the core curriculum. She also asks for further work on integrating in-school and out-of-school provision of arts education, such as additional funding for music hubs to include dance and drama.']

Important Context
- - Ministers answer questions rather than asking them, so have different activity patterns
- - Activity quantity doesn't measure quality or effectiveness of representation
- - Some MPs focus more on constituency work than parliamentary questions
- - Newly elected MPs will have less parliamentary history
