The Prime Minister and Members across the House will have witnessed the spectacular victory for Davy Russell and Scottish Labour at the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-election. My constituents are sick of SNP failure and they voted for change: change for their NHS, for their schools and for Scotland. Has the Prime Minister seen the calls from within the SNP for John Swinney to resign? Does he agree with me that a leader who has only ever lost elections to the Labour party should stay put?
Context
The SNP faces criticism following a recent by-election loss to Scottish Labour.
Leeds East
I pay tribute to my hon. Friend for the role that she and others played in seeing Davy Russell elected. He will be a dedicated champion for his and her constituents. After nearly two decades in power, the SNP got its verdict last Thursday: Scotland wants change. People know that the SNP is completely out of ideas. That is why they want a Labour Government to deliver real change.

Recent reports show that Babcock is having to recruit hundreds of overseas welders because of a skills shortage in Scotland. This is the direct result of decades of under-investment in further education and skills in Scotland. Can the Minister outline what the UK Government can do to ensure that my constituents can access the apprenticeships and skills that defence jobs depend on?
Context
Babcock is recruiting overseas welders due to a skills shortage.
Luke Pollard
My hon. Friend is absolutely right. If only we had a Scottish Government who were investing in defence skills rather than one who dither on defence. The Scottish Government did not invest in the welding centre in Glasgow; it required a Labour Government in the UK to step in and invest. We are delivering for defence. The Scottish Government are dithering on defence, and they are letting jobs slip out of their hands as a result.

Will she commit to including pornography and prostitution issues as part of the violence against women and girls strategy in collaboration with DSIT?
Context
The rise of platforms like OnlyFans has led to increased commercialisation of women’s bodies, raising concerns about online exploitation and prostitution.
The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department (Jess Phillips)
A commitment is made to continue working with colleagues in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology on these issues as they are crucial components of tackling violence against women and girls.

Six weeks ago, Kayden Moy, a 16-year-old boy from East Kilbride in my constituency, was stabbed to death, leaving his family bereft and a community—in my community—in grief. Since Kayden’s tragic death, I have received multiple videos and images of local youths posing while wielding machetes in their own homes, but the police claim that they are powerless to take any action whatever. Does the Minister agree that much more needs to be done to stop the very real glamourisation of knife crime online, and to prevent social media from being a breeding ground for youth violence?
Context
Kayden Moy, a 16-year-old from East Kilbride, was stabbed to death six weeks ago. Since his death, multiple videos and images of local youths posing with machetes have emerged on social media.
The Minister for Policing and Crime Prevention (Dame Diana Johnson)
May I first express my condolences to Kayden’s family and friends? That is just appalling to hear. My hon. Friend is absolutely right about the role that social media can play in glamourising these types of weapons. That is why it is so important that we have measures in the Crime and Policing Bill and the Online Safety Act 1923 to start to tackle that. As I say, it is absolutely appalling.

I thank the Secretary of State for his response, which will give much-needed reassurance to patients across the UK. Any public body that fails to accurately record sex and instead conflates it with gender puts people at serious risk of harm. Unfortunately, this type of organisational capture has been widespread across Scotland, with devastating consequences. Can the Secretary of State assure me that he will raise this issue with his counterparts in the Scottish Government to ensure that NHS Scotland does not put my constituents at risk?
Context
The independent review by Professor Alice Sullivan highlights issues in the accurate recording of sex and gender identity. This includes cases where trans patients are not invited for cancer screening due to inaccurate records.
The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care (Wes Streeting)
I will absolutely undertake to share the approach we are taking with my counterparts across the United Kingdom. The approach I have always taken is one that understands the importance of biological sex, that recognises, understands and supports that someone’s gender identity may not always match their biological sex, and that seeks to navigate a way through what has been an extremely toxic and sometimes harmful debate in a way that protects the sex-based rights of women and protects trans people and their identity. I know that my colleagues across Government are taking an equally sensitive approach, and I think it would be in everyone’s interests if we saw a similar approach across the whole of the United Kingdom.

I thank my right hon. Friend for that answer, and of course my sympathies also go out to that mother this weekend. Recently published data showed a sharp rise in serious violent crime in Scotland, particularly in our cities and towns. Too many of my constituents feel unsafe in East Kilbride town centre and the Village, particularly at night. Meanwhile, the SNP Government’s chronic underfunding of Police Scotland has resulted in officer numbers being at their lowest level since 2008. Does the Secretary of State agree that the SNP now has the funding in place to increase police numbers, and that protecting our community and citizens should be its priority?
Context
Data showed a sharp rise in serious violent crime in Scotland, particularly affecting cities and towns. Police Scotland has the lowest officer numbers since 2008 due to chronic underfunding by the SNP Government.
The Secretary of State for the Home Department (Yvette Cooper)
My hon. Friend is right to say that the Scottish Government have a significant increase in funding, so they can take action to improve public services. This Government have made it a mission to halve knife crime over the next decade, including taking action to get dangerous weapons, such as zombie knives and ninja swords, off our streets by preventing the unlawful sale of these lethal blades, particularly to children.

I recently had the privilege of opening an extension to the Kype Muir wind farm in my constituency. The extension alone will generate enough power for 53,000 homes for 30 years. My constituency is also home to part of Whitelee, the largest onshore wind farm in Europe. However, not one of those turbines was manufactured in the UK, let alone locally. What steps is the Minister taking to develop UK manufacturing capacity in that area?
Context
The MP highlights the importance of job creation in her constituency through renewable energy projects, particularly mentioning the Kype Muir wind farm extension that will power 53,000 homes for 30 years.
Michael Shanks
We will do everything we can, through Great British Energy and the clean industry bonus we have announced today, to grow our domestic supply chains, build industry in this country and win jobs for Britain.

Does the Minister agree that the UK Government should lead the way by outlawing pimping websites and offering support, not sanctions, to victims of commercial sexual exploitation?
Context
Organisations like TARA and Routes Out face challenges due to the lack of legal action against pimping websites, affecting women who are exploited through prostitution and sex trafficking.
Alex Davies-Jones
This Government are leading the way with our mission to halve violence against women and girls—all women and girls. The Victims and Prisoners Act 2024 will require local commissioners to develop joint needs assessments for victims of sexual abuse in order to identify and address the current gaps, and to support these women. On outlawing pimping websites specifically, I would encourage my hon. Friend to speak to the Minister for Safeguarding.

What steps her Department is taking to support victims of commercial sexual exploitation through the criminal justice system.
Context
The question arises from the need to address support services for victims of commercial sexual exploitation, focusing on their access to justice.
Alex Davies-Jones
The Ministry of Justice provides funding for vital victim support services to help victims recover from the impact of crime. His Majesty's Prison and Probation Service has developed guidance to support and identify victims of modern slavery and human trafficking, including those who have been sexually exploited.

Violence against Women and Girls: Pornography Prostitution
02 September 2025
Responding: Jess Phillips
Main Concerns
['Joani Reid highlights the fusion of pornography and sex trade into a system that monetises sexual access to women, with OnlyFans being the global giant generating $6.6 billion in revenue last year while hiding child abuse material behind paywalls. She cites Reuters documentation of criminal cases involving child sexual abuse on the platform, including extreme abuse cases.']
Specific Asks
['Reid asks for proper age and consent checks to protect young people from harmful content online and emphasises the need for better regulations under the Online Safety Act 2023.']

Important Context
- - Ministers answer questions rather than asking them, so have different activity patterns
- - Activity quantity doesn't measure quality or effectiveness of representation
- - Some MPs focus more on constituency work than parliamentary questions
- - Newly elected MPs will have less parliamentary history
