The UK is laying legislation to tackle Iranian nuclear activity and other hostile Iranian activities. The lack of transparency around Iran’s nuclear programme poses a serious threat to international peace and security. Iran has expanded its nuclear programme, including the accumulation of over 400kg of uranium enriched to 60%, the highest level for any non-nuclear weapon state. The UK has complied with UN obligations and designated 71 individuals and entities linked to Iran’s nuclear programme. The Government is now introducing legislation to impose further sectoral measures on Iran, expanding financial and trade prohibitions, and prohibiting Iranian aircraft from landing in the UK unless certain exemptions apply. The legislation includes general licences for the Shah Deniz gas field in Azerbaijan to continue operations, aligning with EU and US policies. The aim is to ensure Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon and to strengthen sanctions to reduce Iranian hostile capabilities.
