Government Response
Florence Eshalomi thanked Simon Hoare for securing the debate and acknowledged the issues raised regarding management companies. She emphasised the importance of ensuring that elderly leaseholders receive proper support and that their concerns are addressed promptly. The Minister highlighted the Government's commitment to enhancing provisions and choice in the residential market, particularly for older people. Eshalomi noted that while many managing agents operate responsibly, others are unscrupulous and need to be regulated. She mentioned the previous Government's commitment to regulate managing agents in 2018 and the need to enforce current standards. Eshalomi also announced plans to introduce mandatory professional qualifications for managing agents and a code of practice setting out minimum standards. She committed to pushing for a timely response on the consultation regarding section 20 and to addressing the emotional, physical, and mental impact on vulnerable residents. Eshalomi expressed her willingness to work with Members of Parliament to address these issues.
