Opened the debate
The Justice Committee found that the county court is in crisis, with systemic delays and inefficiencies. The average time for a small claims case to reach trial now exceeds 50 weeks, and complex cases face even longer delays. Regional differences exacerbate these issues, resulting in a postcode lottery where courts in London and the south-east are among the worst performers. Additionally, court staff are overstretched, poorly paid, with high turnover, leading to inadequate support for court users.

About Westminster Hall Debates

Westminster Hall debates are a chance for MPs to raise important issues affecting their constituents and get a response from a government minister. Unlike Prime Minister's Questions, these debates are more in-depth and collaborative. The MP who secured the debate speaks first, other MPs can contribute, and a minister responds with the government's position.
