Key Requests to Government:

I ask the Minister to explain how the UK's contribution will improve conditions for displaced people this winter and ensure that urgent medical supplies are provided. Additionally, I request information on efforts to preserve evidence of war crimes and details regarding the Government's diplomatic strategy at an international level to counter Russian and Chinese vetoes.

How the Debate Unfolded

Opened the debate
I am concerned about the humanitarian situation in Syria, particularly the ongoing attacks on civilians and the dire conditions faced by displaced people. There are currently 6.2 million individuals living in camps, with winter approaching and little protection from harsh weather conditions. The medical situation is also critical due to the uncertainty of how COVID-19 has impacted Syria. Economically, food insecurity is widespread, affecting approximately half of the remaining population, with food prices increasing by over 400% in some areas.

Government Response
It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship. The hon. Member for Wirral South has spoken with great passion on Syria's humanitarian crisis, highlighting its devastating impact on civilians and the need for accountability for war crimes. The UK has provided £11 million for this cause and stands against Russia's disinformation campaign. We support a UN-facilitated political process as per resolution 2254 but regret Russia and China's repeated vetoes at the UN Security Council which hinder aid deliveries. Despite these challenges, the UK remains committed to humanitarian efforts in Syria with over £3.3 billion in response since 2012, providing essential supplies such as food, medical consultations, vaccinations, and support against gender-based violence and covid-19.

About Westminster Hall Debates

Westminster Hall debates are a chance for MPs to raise important issues affecting their constituents and get a response from a government minister. Unlike Prime Minister's Questions, these debates are more in-depth and collaborative. The MP who secured the debate speaks first, other MPs can contribute, and a minister responds with the government's position.
