Opened the debate
I am concerned about the unlawful detention of my constituent, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, in Iran for nearly six years. She faces ongoing legal challenges and travel bans, and her case is linked to a £400 million debt that the UK owes Iran. I have become increasingly frustrated with the Government's approach to this issue, which seems to ignore the link between the debt and Nazanin's release.

Government Response

James Cleverly
Government Response
The Minister highlighted the UK Government's efforts to resolve the situation of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and other British dual nationals held in Iran, including the provision of support to families, direct communication with Nazanin through the ambassador in Tehran, and continuous lobbying for their release. He noted that despite diplomatic measures such as the recognition of the IMS debt, progress has been limited due to Iran's lack of acknowledgment of dual nationality status. The Minister reaffirmed the Government's commitment to securing the release and return home of all detained British nationals.

About Westminster Hall Debates

Westminster Hall debates are a chance for MPs to raise important issues affecting their constituents and get a response from a government minister. Unlike Prime Minister's Questions, these debates are more in-depth and collaborative. The MP who secured the debate speaks first, other MPs can contribute, and a minister responds with the government's position.
