Opened the debate
Jeremy Corbyn expressed deep concern about the humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia, Sudan, and Tigray. He mentioned that there are currently 60,000 Tigrayan refugees in Sudan, alongside 1.1 million other refugees from historical conflicts. In Ethiopia, he noted a descent into war with forced mobilisation of young people and persecution of those perceived as separatists, leading to displacement of 2.1 million people and food insecurity affecting 80% of the population. Michelle Bachelet's report highlighted reasonable grounds for believing that all parties have committed violations amounting possibly to war crimes.

Government Response
It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Ms Bardell. I congratulate the right hon. Member for Islington North on securing this important debate and thank all hon. Members for their contributions. The situation in Ethiopia is dire, with 7 million people needing humanitarian assistance due to conflict and blockade, leading to food shortages and civilian casualties. In Sudan, there are significant internal challenges following a coup d'état, and the UK condemns the arrest of civilian members of Sudan's transitional Government by the military. Over 80,000 Ethiopians have fled to Sudan due to conflict. The minister calls for an end to hostilities in Ethiopia and urges all parties to allow humanitarian supplies to flow. The UK has provided £76 million in humanitarian aid and continues to press international partners for action on the crisis. In Sudan, we are seeking a return to civilian Government and stabilisation of the situation, with a focus on delivering food aid through Port Sudan.

About Westminster Hall Debates

Westminster Hall debates are a chance for MPs to raise important issues affecting their constituents and get a response from a government minister. Unlike Prime Minister's Questions, these debates are more in-depth and collaborative. The MP who secured the debate speaks first, other MPs can contribute, and a minister responds with the government's position.
