Opened the debate
There is a lack of joined-up thinking between the Government's trade policy and their food and farming policy. British farmers are being told to raise environmental and animal welfare standards while basic payments are reduced, potentially allowing them to be undercut by foreign suppliers with lower standards. The practice of mulesing sheep, battery cages for egg-laying hens, chlorine-washed chickens, long cattle transport journeys, and the use of organophosphate dips in Australia are concerning as they do not meet UK standards.

About Westminster Hall Debates

Westminster Hall debates are a chance for MPs to raise important issues affecting their constituents and get a response from a government minister. Unlike Prime Minister's Questions, these debates are more in-depth and collaborative. The MP who secured the debate speaks first, other MPs can contribute, and a minister responds with the government's position.
