Key Requests to Government:

I urge the Government to support pandemic insurance schemes for festivals and events to prevent further cancellations this summer, which would aid economic recovery and signal that the UK is open for business again. Additionally, I appeal for financial support from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Opened the debate
I am concerned about the impact of the year-long health emergency on individuals and communities. The battle of Barnet in 1471 was a significant turning point, with up to 4,000 lives lost, marking the first extensive use of handguns and curbing the power of magnates. I acknowledge anxiety over the exact location of the battlefield but emphasize its importance for heritage tourism and local businesses. In 2018, around 6,500 people attended a medieval festival celebrating the battle.

About Westminster Hall Debates

Westminster Hall debates are a chance for MPs to raise important issues affecting their constituents and get a response from a government minister. Unlike Prime Minister's Questions, these debates are more in-depth and collaborative. The MP who secured the debate speaks first, other MPs can contribute, and a minister responds with the government's position.
