Theresa Villiers raised concerns about battle of barnet: 550th anniversary in Westminster Hall. Response awaited from government.

Key Requests to Government:

I urge the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport to support the Barnet medieval festival's Spacehive appeal if they have any spare resources. Additionally, I call on the National Lottery Heritage Fund to provide further funding for this year's festival. Lastly, I reiterate my previous calls for Government support for pandemic insurance for festivals and events.

Opened the debate
I am concerned about the potential loss of London's only registered battlefield if the exact location of the Battle of Barnet is disputed. Dr Foard's project suggested that the battle may have taken place further north, towards Wrotham Park estate, rather than in Hadley Green, Old Fold and Hadley Highstone area. Despite this uncertainty, contemporary accounts confirm that fighting extended back towards Barnet, so my constituency is likely to remain part of the battlefield site.

About Westminster Hall Debates

Westminster Hall debates are a chance for MPs to raise important issues affecting their constituents and get a response from a government minister. Unlike Prime Minister's Questions, these debates are more in-depth and collaborative. The MP who secured the debate speaks first, other MPs can contribute, and a minister responds with the government's position.
