Key Requests to Government:

I request the Minister and Secretary of State to intervene to stop the closure of Teignmouth Hospital, ensure future closures consider COVID impacts, mandate separate consultations on hospital closures with proper data collection, and instruct the clinical commissioning group to review data on patient experience, Dawlish Hospital's capacity, and adequacy of the new hub at Teignmouth.

How the Debate Unfolded

MPs spoke in turn to share their views and ask questions. Here's what each person said:

Opened the debate
The hospital in my constituency has been slowly closed through a series of decisions made by the local clinical commissioning group. In 2014, they decided to look at reconfiguration, and subsequent consultations led to the removal of two wards, cancellation of promised rehabilitation beds, and plans for relocating outpatient clinics to Dawlish. The proposal fails to consider adequate evidence on patient experience, domiciliary care provision, and does not take into account post-COVID needs. Additionally, it assumes all intermediate care can be provided at home despite a lack of nursing homes in the area.

Government Response

Government Response
It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Sir Charles, in a sense for the second time. I congratulate my hon. Friend on securing this debate on such an important subject, paying tribute to the amazing work done by NHS staff during the pandemic and highlighting the need for a coherent model of health and social care. The CCG has been reviewing services to make improvements for vulnerable people, identifying three main cases for change: removal of rehabilitation beds at Teignmouth Community Hospital; safeguarding primary care across the constituency; and better use of NHS estate. While the consultation process indicated 61.3% support for proposals, my hon. Friend's concerns were noted on future-proofing services based on lessons learned from covid-19. I will reply to her letter swiftly, meet with her if desired, and encourage proactive engagement between CCG and local population.

About Westminster Hall Debates

Westminster Hall debates are a chance for MPs to raise important issues affecting their constituents and get a response from a government minister. Unlike Prime Minister's Questions, these debates are more in-depth and collaborative. The MP who secured the debate speaks first, other MPs can contribute, and a minister responds with the government's position.
