The Minister is urged to liaise with the Housing Minister to ensure planning committees can include active travel schemes as conditions for approving large developments. Additionally, the Minister should consider funding options to support the Upper Don Trail Trust's vision of an accessible off-road network, which would benefit public health and environmental sustainability.

The Upper Don Trail is a natural trail that runs six miles along the River Don, passing through notable sites in Sheffield's north. The trail aims to enhance accessibility and off-road cycling infrastructure but faces challenges such as disconnected portions of the route, particularly in Gill Furniss' constituency where users must walk alongside busy roads. Despite significant improvements by volunteers and local councils, funding limitations hinder further progress. Active travel requirements for large developments are also not always met, leading to disappointed residents and trust members.

Government Response
It is a pleasure to serve under the chairmanship of Mrs Cummins. The Minister commends the Upper Don Trail Trust for its efforts in connecting people with nature and promoting various activities such as walking, cycling, kayaking, climbing, angling, and riding along the trail. She highlights that 42% of people increased their time outdoors during the pandemic due to trails like the Upper Don. The Minister mentions the £80 million green recovery challenge fund which has engaged an estimated 23,000 people directly and another 3 million indirectly through media events. She also discusses the farming in protected landscapes programme, launching a new charity for national trails, and plans for expanding the England Coast Path and developing a north England trail between St Bees and Robin Hood's Bay. The Minister encourages the Upper Don Trail Trust to liaise with Sheffield City Council and Sustrans on cycle network upgrade proposals and suggests highlighting the issue to various Departments including Transport, Health and Social Care, and Levelling Up, Housing and Communities for additional funding opportunities.

About Westminster Hall Debates
Westminster Hall debates are a chance for MPs to raise important issues affecting their constituents and get a response from a government minister. Unlike Prime Minister's Questions, these debates are more in-depth and collaborative. The MP who secured the debate speaks first, other MPs can contribute, and a minister responds with the government's position.
