Opened the debate
The Lib Dem MP for Oxford West and Abingdon is concerned about the long-standing issue of the incomplete Abingdon Lodge Hill junction, which has caused significant traffic congestion in Abingdon. Local residents have been calling for south-facing slips to be added to the junction for over 30 years but no progress has been made due to funding issues. The MP cites air pollution, road safety concerns, and reduced quality of life as primary problems affecting Abingdon's residents. Additionally, she highlights that with new housing developments being constructed, local infrastructure is falling behind schedule, causing frustration among the community.

Government Response

Government Response
It is a great pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Ms McVey, and to listen to the hon. Member for Oxford West and Abingdon as she sets out her case on Lodge Hill junction. The Government stand firmly behind local leaders in Oxfordshire through significant funding for housing and growth, including a £215 million deal to deliver 100,000 homes and infrastructure improvements across the county. Oxfordshire also benefits from £107 million of housing infrastructure funding for the A40 smart corridor scheme and £35 million for the Oxford science transit project. The minister noted that the Lodge Hill junction is a strategic highway project supported by Vale of White Horse District Council, with responsibility for delivery lying with Oxfordshire County Council, subject to technical approval from National Highways. She mentioned ongoing discussions about funding shortfalls and encouraged further meetings to address details involved in developing the business case.

About Westminster Hall Debates

Westminster Hall debates are a chance for MPs to raise important issues affecting their constituents and get a response from a government minister. Unlike Prime Minister's Questions, these debates are more in-depth and collaborative. The MP who secured the debate speaks first, other MPs can contribute, and a minister responds with the government's position.
