Opened the debate
Ms Caroline Lucas is concerned about the current policy framework that has led to ups and downs in solar rooftop installations. She notes that while there has been a significant increase in installations, more needs to be done to meet the Government's target of increasing solar capacity from around 15 GW currently to 70 GW by 2035. Ms Lucas highlights that approximately two-thirds of existing solar power capacity is ground-based and one-third is on rooftops, with Solar Energy UK estimating this split among residential and commercial roofs. She also mentions a YouGov poll showing 80% public support for mandatory solar panels on suitable new-build homes.

About Westminster Hall Debates

Westminster Hall debates are a chance for MPs to raise important issues affecting their constituents and get a response from a government minister. Unlike Prime Minister's Questions, these debates are more in-depth and collaborative. The MP who secured the debate speaks first, other MPs can contribute, and a minister responds with the government's position.
