Government Response
It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Mr Dowd. I thank everyone for the constructive tone of the debate and congratulate Olivia Blake on her comprehensive speech. Felicity Buchan, the Minister responsible for the Homes for Ukraine scheme, expressed pride in the UK's support for Ukrainian nationals and their families. Since launching the scheme on 18 March 2022, over 163,500 people have found a safe home in the UK. The Government provided £1.1 billion to councils through a tariff for each arrival, with an additional £500 million fund for local authorities to purchase or build homes. Buchan highlighted efforts to prevent homelessness and support integration into the community. She also mentioned the importance of English language classes and ensuring professional qualifications are recognised. The minister addressed issues such as council tax disregard for Ukrainian arrivals living with sponsors and clarified differences between the Homes for Ukraine scheme and other routes, emphasizing that individuals have the same rights under both schemes.

About Westminster Hall Debates

Westminster Hall debates are a chance for MPs to raise important issues affecting their constituents and get a response from a government minister. Unlike Prime Minister's Questions, these debates are more in-depth and collaborative. The MP who secured the debate speaks first, other MPs can contribute, and a minister responds with the government's position.
