Opened the debate
The rebuild of Leighton Hospital is a crucial project for the local community, with over 100,000 A&E attendances and 290,000 outpatient appointments annually. The hospital faces challenges due to its outdated infrastructure and the risk associated with reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) used in parts of the building. Over £55 million was spent on remedial works in 2022-23, and more funding will be required for further work.

Government Response
It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Mrs Harris. I congratulate my hon. Friend the Member for Crewe and Nantwich on securing this important debate on the rebuild of Leighton Hospital. Securing the rebuild of Leighton Hospital was a long-term team effort involving local hospital leadership, community support through petitions, and advocacy from Members of Parliament such as Edward Timpson and Fiona Bruce. The Government announced the rebuild in May 2023 as part of the new hospital programme to ensure patient safety and access to modern facilities by 2030. More than £2 million has been allocated for critical early works, including electricity capacity upgrades and geothermal and solar enablers, with over £50 million provided to address RAAC at the existing hospital and further funding for A&E department upgrades and a new surgical hub in Northwich. The Government is exploring the use of geothermal energy across NHS sites. Over 100 engagement events have been held to build awareness among businesses involved in construction and MEP markets, and Hospital 2.0 will be launched later this year to standardise designs for efficient construction. Four hospitals are already open, with another four expected to open by the end of the next financial year. The Government remains committed to delivering all announced schemes including Leighton Hospital's rebuild.

About Westminster Hall Debates

Westminster Hall debates are a chance for MPs to raise important issues affecting their constituents and get a response from a government minister. Unlike Prime Minister's Questions, these debates are more in-depth and collaborative. The MP who secured the debate speaks first, other MPs can contribute, and a minister responds with the government's position.
