Key Requests to Government:
I ask the Minister to admit Israel is actively blocking humanitarian aid and hindering ceasefire agreements. I urge the Government to take action such as enforcing a prohibition on arms sales to Israel to send a clear message against impunity for breaches of international humanitarian law.
How the Debate Unfolded
MPs spoke in turn to share their views and ask questions. Here's what each person said:
Lead Contributor
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is overwhelming, with over 42,000 deaths since the attack on 7 October. The population faces acute food insecurity, displacement, and a health crisis with hospitals destroyed and 10 children per day losing limbs due to malnutrition and unsanitary conditions. Experts estimate that the actual death toll could be closer to 186,000. Aid convoys are being blocked by Israeli authorities, leading to shortages despite trucks lined up on borders.
Adnan Hussain
Ind
Blackburn
Agreed with calls for additional aid and safe routes into Gaza. Questioned UK's role in providing both aid and weapons to the region. I am concerned about the absurdity of providing aid to Gaza while also selling arms to Israel, which has resulted in over 40,000 deaths. I ask the Minister to reconsider the Government's position on arms sales to Israel and address whether such sales are morally or legally justifiable given recent bombings of safe zones housing displaced civilians.

Andy McDonald
Lab
Middlesbrough and Thornaby East
I urge the Minister to negotiate an end-use agreement with F-35 programme supply chain counterparts to prevent components from being used against international humanitarian law, noting recent IDF bombings in Gaza. I also stress the importance of recognising Palestine as a prerequisite for peace. The MP condemned Israel's actions against UN peacekeepers in Lebanon as a violation of international law.
Apsana Begum

Ms Begum urged the Government to refrain from euphemistic phrasing about civilian casualties in Gaza, condemning the actions of the Israeli military. She highlighted the deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure, blocking of aid, and weaponisation of starvation, expressing shock at UK's continued support for Israel. The MP questioned how the UK can consider Israel a close ally while aid is being hindered, suggesting that efforts to secure aid are not effective.
Barry Gardiner
Lab
Brent West
Mr Gardiner discussed the legal implications of the International Court of Justice's advisory opinion on the legality of Israel's presence in occupied Palestinian territories. He highlighted that settlements and outposts are unlawful under international law, urging Israel to cease its activities and provide reparations for damage caused since 1967. The MP suggested it was time to stop 'asking' and take stronger action, noting that previous requests for Israeli actions had not been fulfilled.
Blair McDougall
Lab
East Renfrewshire
Blair McDougall stressed the importance of winter preparedness due to expected worsening conditions, questioned the Government's role in aid provision for hygiene kits and shelter. He also raised concerns about long-term security issues such as agricultural damage and the need for reconstruction without past failures repeating.

Throughout the past 12 months, the UK Government have failed to highlight or prevent the Israeli Government's denial of international assistance into Gaza. The hon. Member questioned why the UK is not enforcing Security Council resolutions.
Jeremy Corbyn

Described the destruction caused by Israeli soldiers in Gaza, highlighting that doctors attempting to enter Gaza face extreme restrictions and few hospitals are operational. He emphasized Israel's control over access and exit, leading to a severe humanitarian crisis with famine, lack of medical supplies, and destruction of infrastructure.
Hayes and Harlington
Mr McDonnell highlighted the urgent need to evacuate seriously injured children from Gaza, drawing parallels with the evacuation system established during the Ukraine conflict. He expressed frustration at the lack of response from government officials and called for immediate action. Government Response
Hamish Falconer
Government Response
I am grateful to the hon. Member for Birmingham Perry Barr (Ayoub Khan) for securing this important debate. This week marked one year since Hamas's brutal attack against Israel, which resulted in over 1,000 people being massacred and hundreds taken hostage. Close to 42,000 people have been killed in Gaza, with more than 90% of the population displaced. The humanitarian zone covers less than 15% of the Gaza strip, which is chronically overcrowded and lacks clean water and sanitation. Sixty-six per cent of buildings, including hospitals, are damaged or destroyed. The Government recognises that the situation in Gaza is a catastrophe on all counts and calls for an immediate ceasefire. We urge our Israeli counterparts to take three key steps: avoid civilian casualties, ensure aid can flow freely into Gaza through land routes, and allow the UN and its humanitarian partners to operate safely and effectively. Since entering office in July, we have lifted the funding pause on UNRWA and provided £21 million to support its humanitarian appeal in Gaza. We also continue to push for an immediate ceasefire and work with our allies to achieve this goal.

About Westminster Hall Debates
Westminster Hall debates are a chance for MPs to raise important issues affecting their constituents and get a response from a government minister. Unlike Prime Minister's Questions, these debates are more in-depth and collaborative. The MP who secured the debate speaks first, other MPs can contribute, and a minister responds with the government's position.
