Action Requested

Together with the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, a Command Paper launching the Fit Note Reform Call for Evidence is being published. This seeks stakeholder input on how to improve the current fit note process to better support people's health and employment needs.

Key Facts

  • There are currently 2.8 million people aged between 16-64 economically inactive due to long-term sickness.
  • 10 million 'not fit for work' fit notes are issued annually.
  • £24m has been announced by the Chancellor at Autumn Statement 2023 to implement fit note ‘trailblazers’ in England’s Integrated Care Systems.
  • The trailblazers aim to test how best to support individuals on prolonged fit notes to stay or return to work.
