The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombuds [6D [K Ombudsman published a report on 'Women's State Pension age: our findings on [2D [K on injustice and associated issues' on 21 March 2024, recommending certain [K changes.
What recent assessment has the government made of [2D [K of the potential merits of implementing the recommendations in the Parliame [8D [K Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman's report entitled 'Women's State [5D [K State Pension age: our findings on injustice and associated issues', publis [6D [K published on 21 March 2024?
The Government made their decision on this case on [K 29 January 2026, after giving the PHSO's report careful consideration. The [K detailed reasons for our decision were set out in our response, which has b [1D [K been placed in the Library of the House.

The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombuds [6D [K Ombudsman has recommended compensation for millions of women affected by th [2D [K the Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI). The PHSO recommendation [14D [K recommendations are generally complied with in 99% of cases.
In 99% of cases, PHSO recommendations are complie [7D [K complied with, so does the Minister accept that singling out this group by [K not complying amounts to discrimination on the basis of sex and age? If not [3D [K not, what possible justification can the Minister offer?
As I have previously said to this House, it is unus [4D [K unusual but not unprecedented for the Government to take a different view f [1D [K from the PHSO. That does not mean that we have not taken its report incredi [7D [K incredibly seriously—I have also met its representatives—but as I have said [4D [K said, we set out the detailed reasons for the decision we came to in the re [2D [K response we laid in the House of Commons Library on 29 January.

The Department's own 2007 evaluation raised [6D [K raised doubts about the effectiveness of letters to pensioners, and thousan [7D [K thousands of women were deprived of the required notice period.
I ask this question on behalf of the 6,000 WASPI [K women in Strangford. Given that the Department's own 2007 evaluation raised [6D [K raised serious doubts about the effectiveness of letters to pensioners, how [3D [K how can the Minister justify the decision that no direct financial loss occ [3D [K occurred when thousands of women were deprived of the 28-month notice perio [5D [K period required to adjust their life savings and retirement plans? In the l [1D [K light of the Scottish Parliament's decision to again press this issue in Fe [2D [K February, will he please do the right thing, put actions before apologies, [K and deliver help and support?
The hon. Member has raised this issue repeatedly ov [2D [K over a number of years, and I recognise that. Specifically on the issues he [2D [K he raises, it was the ombudsman itself, rather than the Government, that in [2D [K initially set out that the women affected did not suffer direct financial l [1D [K loss. The ombudsman was looking narrowly at how the state pension age incre [5D [K increase was communicated, which is different from the decision to accelera [8D [K accelerate the increase in 2011. The hon. Member raises the 2007 evidence s [1D [K showing a minority of people read and remembered such letters.

The Public Health Service Ombudsman stated [K in March 2024 that these women were not properly informed about changes to [K their state pension.
These women were not properly informed about chan [4D [K changes to their state pension. So said the PHSO on 21 March 2024, just in [K time for the election when many Labour Members promised to address the issu [4D [K issue if elected—a broken promise. Can I ask why the last ministerial meeti [5D [K meeting with the WASPI women took place in September 2024? Secondly, can he [2D [K he tell the House what work has been undertaken on a properly structured co [2D [K compensation scheme?
The hon. Member raises questions about Labour Membe [5D [K Members' promises in 2024 and the last ministerial meeting with the WASPI w [1D [K women, which took place in September 2024. He is right that Labour opposed [K accelerating the state pension age but lost those votes and the court uphel [5D [K upheld the decision. The debate here focuses on communications rather than [K decisions. On compensation, our manifesto did not make a commitment to brin [4D [K bring forward such measures.

The question relates to the ombudsman's fin [3D [K findings on financial loss due to delayed letters about state pension chang [5D [K changes.
Can the Minister detail what the ombudsman found [K about the financial loss women suffered as a result of the delay in sending [7D [K sending out letters? Can he say what this Government are doing to support w [1D [K women in retirement in my constituency?
My hon. Friend rightly raises issues about the dist [4D [K distinction between communicating state pension age increases and the decis [5D [K decision itself. The speed of increase in 2011 affected millions, particula [9D [K particularly women. We are increasing the state pension via the triple lock [4D [K lock to up to £2,100 this month. Also, we are investing £26 billion into ou [2D [K our NHS.

In opposition, the Prime Minister promised [K compensation for WASPI women but later opted for a pragmatic approach. The [K Pension Schemes Bill is under debate.
When his party was in opposition, the Prime Minis [5D [K Minister promised compensation for WASPI women, but when faced with the eco [3D [K economic reality of the costs, he and the Secretary of State chose common s [1D [K sense over ideology. In the spirit of that pragmatism, may I ask the Pensio [6D [K Pensions Minister also to take a sensible, thoughtful approach to mandation [9D [K mandation powers in the Pension Schemes Bill, and to remove clause 40 altog [5D [K altogether?
We have debated this issue extensively in recent we [2D [K weeks, and the House will have another chance to do so later today. Represe [7D [K Representatives of the industry itself have said that it is in the interest [8D [K interests of savers to invest in a wider range of assets, reflecting lesson [6D [K lessons from open defined-benefit schemes and those in other parts of the w [1D [K world where UK's defined-contribution schemes lack exposure to a broader as [2D [K asset range. We introduced a reserve measure to backstop changes needed to [K solve collective action problems, ensuring savers do not lose out. Signific [8D [K Significant protections, including an affirmative vote and savers' interest [8D [K interest tests, have been put in place.
