The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games is set [K to take place in Martin Rhodes' constituency, and he wants to ensure that t [1D [K the games are successful both economically and in terms of hosting major ev [2D [K events.
What steps her Department is taking to support th [2D [K the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth games. Having recently visited the Scottish E [1D [K Event Campus in my constituency, which will host the opening ceremony along [5D [K along with a number of sports during the games, I have seen at first hand t [1D [K the opportunity these games represent for tourism, hospitality and local bu [2D [K businesses. Given the importance of these events for Scotland and Glasgow's [9D [K Glasgow's economy, what conversations is the Minister having with the Scott [5D [K Scottish Government and the Scotland Office to ensure that the games are a [K success for Glasgow and that Glasgow is well placed to attract further cult [4D [K cultural and sporting events in the years ahead?
The UK Government have consistently backed Glasgow [K 2026 as a positive outcome for the games movement and for the UK. The Gover [5D [K Government are engaging partners to explore trade and investment opportunit [10D [K opportunities around the games in order to support the games and maximise t [1D [K the benefits for the whole UK. My hon. Friend asks an excellent question. I [1D [K I have met regularly with the Scottish Government, the Scotland Office, the [3D [K the organising company and, of course, Commonwealth Sport, most recently in [2D [K in January this year. I also attended events in December and August last ye [2D [K year. My Department is in regular contact with the organisers and all partn [5D [K partners to support the games and ensure they build on Glasgow's world-clas [10D [K world-class reputation for hosting major events.

The sport and recreation sector is experien [8D [K experiencing confusion due to the Government's chaotic roll-out of new rule [4D [K rules regarding medical provision at events. There is a need for clear info [4D [K information from relevant departments about who will be impacted and what c [1D [K costs are involved.
Many of our Commonwealth hopefuls started their c [1D [K careers in community events like parkruns and local sports clubs, and yet t [1D [K the sport and recreation sector is in a state of utter confusion because of [2D [K of the Government's chaotic roll-out of the new rules on medical provision. [10D [K provision. The Government have said that they do not want small events to b [1D [K be “overregulated”. What does that even mean? There is a wholesale lack of [K information from the Department of Health and Social Care and the Care Qual [4D [K Quality Commission about who will be impacted and what it will cost, and th [2D [K there has been no meaningful impact assessment. The Government have warm wo [2D [K words about local sport provision, but their actions never stand up to the [K test. Can this Minister please give us a definitive answer?
The hon. Lady makes a really important point. We ar [2D [K are obviously keen to make this a success, and I would be delighted to meet [4D [K meet her to discuss it further.
