Manchester Central
Context
The manufacturing sector in Manchester Central and other regions is facing challenges due to the pandemic, with many communities relying on key sectors such as aerospace and automotive for employment. The government has provided stimulus measures for less affected sectors like housing.
What recent discussions have been had with the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy regarding sectoral support for manufacturers during the covid-19 outbreak? Many communities that voted Conservative rely on manufacturing jobs in aerospace and automotive. Given the government's £3 billion stimulus for the housing market, why not provide a similar demand stimulus for these harder-hit sectors?
The Government are supporting manufacturing through £8.5 billion in measures, including grants for research and development, loans, export guarantees, and over £1 billion committed to promote ultra-low emissions vehicles and support the roll-out of a superfast charging network.
Assessment & feedback
The specific request for a demand stimulus similar to that provided for the housing market was not directly addressed with equivalent figures or commitments for aerospace and automotive sectors.

Many of the communities that voted Conservative rely on our key manufacturing sectors such as aerospace and automotive for jobs. Given that the Government were prepared to create a £3 billion demand stimulus for the housing market, which was not as adversely affected by the pandemic, why will they not do a lot more to protect those jobs and communities with a demand stimulus for aerospace and automotive, which is desperately needed?
