Context
More than 700 million people lack daily access to water, and climate change will exacerbate this issue.
What recent assessment has the Department made of the effect of water projects in tackling climate change? Does the Minister agree that only 5% of global climate finance is spent on adaptation measures, thus making it imperative to increase funding for water, sanitation and hygiene projects?
DFID supports poorer countries in understanding how climate change affects water availability and managing resources sustainably. It spends about £300 million annually on water projects, providing clean water or toilets to over 51 million people since 2015 across 30 countries. By 2030, 40% of the world's population could face water scarcity if no action is taken; COP26 this year aims to galvanise global ambition on climate change.
