Giles Watling Con
Lowestoft
Context
Watling raises concerns about the accessibility of NHS services for women suffering from mesh implant complications.
What recent assessment has been made of the effectiveness of NHS services for the treatment of mesh complications? Many women have to travel far for operations and are told they are not eligible. The mesh recovery centres have not yet opened, causing pain and torment for those affected. There is also concern that English and Welsh patients do not receive similar financial support as Scottish patients.
Departmental officials are working with NHS England and Improvement to establish means of specialist support. Commissioning of mesh removal centres is underway, expected to be operational later this year. Concerns about eligibility will be reviewed due to the hon. Friend's question during a challenging period. The Scottish element pertains to the devolved government; patients should seek independent advice or consult with clinicians.
