Context
The financial position of Merthyr Tydfil and Caerphilly County Borough Councils was already challenging before the pandemic due to years of UK Government austerity. The impact of Storm Dennis and the current pandemic has exacerbated this situation.
Will the Minister commit to ensuring that the Welsh Government receive the funding they need for Welsh local authorities, as well as the funding promised by the Prime Minister in February to tackle the effects of Storm Dennis? Local authorities in my area are facing a very difficult situation due to both these issues and the ongoing pandemic.
The Minister acknowledged that winter storms had significant impacts on several communities and reaffirmed the commitment to deliver promised funds. However, he noted that local government is a devolved matter and his Department does not engage directly with Welsh councils; they will receive their fair share according to the Barnett formula.
