Q3 Direct Answer
Context
The question is prompted by the need to address particulate matter from shipping lanes affecting coastal areas, requiring an international response beyond domestic policies.
Will my hon. Friend assure the House that the Government are equally committed to working at the international level to see improvements in air quality in her home town, given that this issue demands an international approach and change? The questioner highlights Eastbourne's susceptibility to particulate matter from busy shipping lanes.
I am glad to confirm that the Government are committed to international efforts through the International Maritime Organisation. From 1 January 2021, the channel and North sea will be designated a nitrogen oxide emissions control area under international law. I thank her for her advocacy.
