Negotiations between UK and Australia for a free trade agreement have commenced, with the first round held from June 29 to July 10. The Australian High Commissioner George Brandis has been engaging with Northern Ireland businesses to encourage growth opportunities.
The hon. Member inquired about progress on negotiations and asked how the Government intends to extend opportunities under a trade agreement to benefit businesses in Northern Ireland specifically.
Trade negotiators from the UK and Australia held the first round of negotiations between 29 June and 10 July, covering most aspects of a comprehensive free trade agreement. The second round begins on September 21. The Australian High Commissioner has been promoting benefits across the UK, and Northern Ireland will benefit from UK free trade agreements. Yesterday, I spoke with Bushmills in North Antrim about Irish whiskey and discussed removing the current 5% tariff on Irish whiskey and Scotch whisky entering Australia.
