Context
Southampton has received Government funding for additional cycle lanes, many of which lie unused. The constituency is surrounded by hills, making cycling difficult without e-bikes or e-scooters.
Southampton has received government funding for additional cycle lanes that are not being used. My constituency is hilly and discouraging to cyclists. E-bikes and scooters could help. I welcome the news of legal e-scooters but city centre hire schemes will make little difference in Southampton without relaxing regulations on privately owned e-scooters. Will my hon. Friend look again at privately owned e-scooters?
My hon. Friend is right, we need to capitalise on the recent growth in active travel, especially with bicycles and e-bicycles. Regarding e-scooters, trials will only include rental scooters for controlled assessment of safety and other impacts. A wide range of standards are available among different models. I hope these trials will demonstrate their usefulness.
