Context
The United States imposed a 25% tariff on single malt Scotch whisky one year ago, affecting exports and potentially threatening thousands of jobs in the Scottish whisky industry. The Scotch whisky industry has lost £360 million due to these tariffs.
What discussions have been had with the US counterpart regarding the punitive 25% tariff imposed on single malt Scotch whisky? Despite efforts by the government, why is the Scotch whisky industry in the same situation today as it was a year ago?
We oppose these tariffs vigorously. We are stepping up talks with the US and were pleased that in August the US did not extend the tariffs to blended whisky, and actually removed them from shortbread. The irony is that the Scottish National party urge us to enter into direct trade talks with the US—something we are already doing but cannot do if rejoining the European Union.

A year ago, the United States imposed a 25% tariff on single malt Scotch whisky, causing significant damage to exports and threatening thousands of jobs in Scotland. The Scotch whisky industry has lost £360 million due to these tariffs.
Despite the Minister's Department making the removal of those damaging tariffs a priority, why is the Scotch whisky industry, apart from being £360 million poorer, in exactly the same place today as it was a year ago?
