Context
Dr Amir Burney and Dr Kashif Chauhan have raised concerns about the safety of BAME medical staff.
Dr Amir Burney of the Association of Pakistani Physicians of Northern Europe and Dr Kashif Chauhan of the Nottinghamshire Doctors Families Association have written to me raising concerns that their members are scared. NHS trusts have reported problems in moving at-risk BAME NHS staff away from the frontline despite Public Health England recommendations. What discussions has the Minister had with the Secretary of State for Health regarding the risk assessment and health protection measures for BAME staff?
The Public Health England review is examining this issue. NHS England has recommended employers risk-assess staff as a precaution to see if they are at greater risk, and put other measures in place to protect them. We are working round the clock to ensure that everyone on the frontline during the pandemic is protected.
