Context
Inquires about the government's discussions with Health and Social Care on Bradford University's potential to establish a medical school.
What discussions has the Secretary of State had with the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care on the merits of Bradford University establishing a medical school? The last Conservative Government did not engage any university in Yorkshire when planning medical schools. Given the current focus on 'levelling up', might the Minister consider supporting Bradford's bid to train medics, considering post-Brexit Britain will face skills shortages?
The Secretary of State did not specifically discuss this with Health and Social Care, but grant funding is provided to eligible higher education providers. The university submitted a bid in 2017 which was unsuccessful despite the Government's support through creating five new medical schools adding 1,500 places. Engagement did occur though, and the Minister offers to visit the university.
