Questions & Answers

Q1 Valerie Vaz Lab Walsall and Bloxwich
Context

The issue concerns the detention of several British dual nationals in Iran, including Anoosheh Ashoori, Morad Tahbaz, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, and Mehran Raoof. These individuals have been held for years without adequate diplomatic efforts to secure their release.

Question

What diplomatic steps is she taking to help ensure the release of detained British citizens during negotiations with Iran? Anoosheh Ashoori is on hunger strike and needs diplomatic protection. Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, six years a hostage: innocent. Morad Tahbaz, an environmentalist: innocent. Mehran Raoof, a trade unionist: innocent.

Answer from James Cleverly

Our Department works tirelessly, daily, in our attempts to bring these people home and we do so not because questions are raised in the House or sent to us in correspondence but because it is the right thing to do. We work closely with international partners, both in the region and across the Atlantic, to bring about the release of these people whose detention is completely illegitimate and wrong.

Partly answered

Not addressed: Commitment to specifically working with Robert Malley or any other US special envoy was not directly addressed.
