Context

Heating UK homes contributes to carbon emissions, with the green homes grant being scrapped by this Government.

Question

Why was the ambition for zero-carbon homes abandoned in 2016? Why was the green homes grant scrapped this month? What will replace it?

Answer from Eddie Hughes

The green homes grant is of course a BEIS initiative. Although making encouraging progress—over 96,000 applications with 39,000 vouchers issued—the scheme was not progressing quickly enough. We have taken stock and decided to reconsider our approach. The Secretary of State for BEIS announced £300 million extra funding through the local authority delivery element of the green homes grant scheme and the social housing decarbonisation fund, bringing total spending on energy efficiency to £1.3 billion.

Partly answered

Not addressed: The reasons behind abandoning zero-carbon homes plans in 2016 were not addressed.
