Context
Following an incident where an organisation in Anfield, Liverpool Walton offered conversion therapies involving harmful practices like rituals and starvation. The Government had previously committed to banning such methods.
An organisation in my constituency was exposed for offering 'cures' for homosexuality through harmful rituals and starvation. After a previous commitment from the government to ban these so-called conversion therapies, there are concerns that progress has stalled under the new administration. When will the Government introduce legislation to prohibit these practices as promised? Following yesterday's statement regarding changes to the Gender Recognition Act 2004 which fell short of expectations for securing trans rights, will a full debate be initiated in the Chamber?
Conversion therapy is entirely abhorrent. We are actively working towards ending it by conducting research, which I will report back on soon with plans for its cessation. On the Gender Recognition Act 2004 changes, we aim to protect transgender rights and enhance healthcare services through the opening of more clinics and simplifying gender recognition certificate processes.
