The hon. Member seeks clarity on measures to support schools in regions with rising infections.

Question

In areas with new restrictions, does the Secretary of State's statement that 'schools will remain open' include those who have tested positive for COVID? There is widespread uncertainty among pupils, parents and staff regarding home learning arrangements during a local lockdown or isolated outbreak. What assurances are there that children studying remotely can access broadband, and that teachers have capacity to deliver remote education? Where are the laptops promised months ago?

Answer from The Secretary of State for Education (Gavin Williamson)

We distributed over 200,000 laptops and more than 40,000 internet connections to disadvantaged children through local authorities and multi-academy trusts. I suggest he addresses concerns with his local authority. We outlined our expectations for schools on July 2nd regarding the continuity of education. An additional 150,000 laptops are being provided for communities that cannot offer face-to-face teaching. Schools will only be closed as a last resort.
