Concerns about closed online groups inciting hatred and violence against communities becoming scapegoats for the pandemic.
There has been a disproportionate number of deaths of black people as a result of coronavirus, with equality organisations raising concerns about online groups mobilising to incite hate. Stop Hate UK claims that actual hate crime numbers are likely higher due to under-reporting. What specific plans have been put in place proactively to address the feared increase in hate crimes?
Any form of hate crime is completely unacceptable. We expect perpetrators to be brought to justice and encourage victims to report incidents to the police. The Government work closely with the National Police Chiefs' Council to ensure all police forces provide assistance to communities and organisations, promoting dialogue and support. Legislation against cyber-attacks and online harassment exists and will continue to be enforced.
