There is a high level of child poverty in Scotland, with one in four children living below the poverty line. The Institute for Fiscal Studies predicts an increase to about 37% by 2021.
Question
What recent discussions has the Secretary of State had on the level of child poverty in Scotland? It is estimated that 230,000 children in Scotland live in poverty, which is higher than many European countries. Poor children often achieve less in school and suffer chronic illness or poor mental health. The Institute for Fiscal Studies predicts a rise to about 37% by 2021. Does the Minister agree that Tory policies such as the two-child benefit cap, zero-hours contracts, and universal credit contribute to this increase?
Answer from Will Quince
The Government are committed to tackling poverty. Since 2010, over 400,000 people have been lifted out of absolute poverty and income inequality has fallen. The Scottish Government has powers to address poverty through devolved programmes like skills, education, health, and employment. Both Governments should work together on this issue.
