Context
The question arises from trade tensions affecting UK steel exporters, particularly due to US section 232 tariffs and potential EU tariff impacts.
What steps is the Department taking to support UK steel exports. The greatest step that Ministers can take to protect our exports is to protect our steel industry as a whole. Will Ministers commit to working with Labour on a cross-party basis, as promised in yesterday's debate, to fix deficiencies in trade remedies legislation and reverse recommendations harmful to the industry?
The Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) has reviewed the steel safeguard measure proportionately and WTO-compliantly. It is an independent body providing unbiased assessments. The Secretary of State can only accept or reject the TRA recommendation as a whole, but will consider carefully the trade remedies framework's powers to tackle unfair trade.
