Easington
Context
The question follows an announcement by Grahame Morris presenting his Bill to reduce violence in prisons, highlighting the issue of prison officers being attacked at work.
What steps he is taking to improve safety in prisons. Since I presented my Bill to reduce violence in prisons—the Prisons (Violence) Bill—last month, numerous prison officers have contacted me to share their experiences of being attacked at work. Will she listen to her prison staff and back the provisions in my Bill to reduce violence?
The hon. Gentleman talks about an issue on which there is agreement across the House. The prison officers and staff must be protected from violence in their workplace, for which HMPPS and private providers are already under statutory duties to protect them. We have committed through our prisons strategy White Paper to further improve safety with a £100 million security investment programme to combat illicit items like drugs and phones.

The hon. Gentleman rightly made points about an issue on which there is agreement across the House regarding the protection of prison officers and staff from violence in their workplace, for which HMPPS and private providers are already under statutory duties to protect them. We have committed through our prisons strategy White Paper to further improve safety with a £100 million security investment programme to combat illicit items like drugs and phones.
