Context
The backlog of cases before criminal courts has increased significantly due to the pandemic. James Daly asks about actions taken by the Department.
What steps his Department is taking to reduce the backlog of cases before the criminal courts?
We are seeing results from efforts to tackle the pandemic's impact. Magistrates court caseload is close to pre-pandemic levels, and Crown court outstanding cases reduced from around 61,000 in June 2021 to 58,700 by November 2021. Next financial year, we expect a 20% increase in Crown court case resolution compared to the pre-covid period.

Bar Council warns that proposals to give magistrates more sentencing powers could exacerbate the backlog. Steve Reed questions if the Government is worsening the situation.
Are the Government making a bad situation worse because they do not have a clue what they are doing or because they have gone soft on crime?
